Transcription jobs
Transcriptionists can make a good income from home. As long as you are able to type, it is possible to work as an independent transcriptionist.
One of the plus points is that most jobs use web-based software. This means there is no need to download anything and it should work with all modern laptops.
What is TRANSCRIBING?
Transcribing involves the transcription of audio conversations in order to be digitally logged. Transcribing audio into text is necessary for all types of audio, including formal conversations such as interviews with national media, HR disciplinary meetings and other notable events. There are also audio books, audio discussions or academic content, as well as focus groups and business meetings.
HOW IT WORKS
After a training phase, you will be able to see the jobs on a dashboard. To start working, you must claim a job. One job can be claimed at a time. The jobs must either be written from scratch or edited using an auto-transcript.
All jobs are paid per audio minute in US$, usually $0.30-$1, but can go much higher.
The difficulty of the audio is what determines value. Although scratch jobs are generally more lucrative per minute, they can be very difficult to perform. Once you have learned how to use auto-transcript work you might not want to concentrate on scratch jobs.
There are many topics related to jobs. These include interviews with media (including nationals), business meetings and marketing focus groups. Entertainment and education themes are also common.
Many jobs are sorted by accent. The majority of work is done in the USA, but this can sometimes mean that accents from the UK can be more expensive and transcribers can find them easier than others. This marginal premium may lead to you choosing to specialize in UK accents, Irish or Scottish, and possibly even the Irish.
However, the ‘piece rate of a job’ can fluctuate. Although it is not known why, you will notice a shift in the job cost. Their value can fall when there are only a handful of jobs available. At peak times, there may be more than 1000 jobs to choose from. Usually, the 100s.
HOW TO GET IN
Dan Phillips, a transcriber, advised us that there is a short test of grammar followed by a training period in which you watch past videos. These videos are then graded on various metrics. To be eligible for the main job site, you must meet all criteria.
Although your work will be graded randomly by the system, I found that it was often very regular and then dropped off. You must maintain a 4.5 accuracy score. Where you did not get it right, feedback was generally quite positive. These quality checks are performed by other transcribers.
TOP TIPS
Dan Phillips offered some great advice on how to get into transcribing. “Audio from a single interview is often divided into several sections, so get one done, and then try to grab the other one, as this will reduce your need of background info research.
Clips that are relevant to your subject matter should be found. If you are familiar with US Sport or football in general, this will help you target your niche. At first, you should only select clips with two people in an interview situation. Because you don’t know how many people there are, focus groups can be difficult to distinguish.
Phillips says that while transcribing can help you earn small amounts like PS50 per week, it can also be a great way to make more than PS100 without putting in a lot of time or losing sleep.
Low-paid jobs have clearer audio. I usually go for $0.45-60 per minute. If they aren’t British accents, higher ones can be difficult. Software can also speed up or slow down audio, if needed.
For example, if you are a UK citizen, you may find it easier to transcribe Australian clips than US clips. However, if you don’t know much about Australia, the names of Aboriginal places can be confusing.
Where to begin?
Rev is a transcription company that you can ‘favourite.’ This allows you to ‘favourite.’ Different clients are often posted by Rev. It also helps you narrow down your favorite accents and topics when there is a lot of work. If you have good ratings (4.8+) and other metrics, you can move up to Rev+, which gives you first choice of the jobs.
These companies are very serious about protecting their clients’ privacy and will ban anyone who breaches it or publishes gossip via clips on the internet. You might feel tempted to tell someone something you know, but don’t!
