Expert Interview: How to Be a Voice Actor
We would love to hear about you and your journey into voice acting.
First, I am originally from Iowa. I have a BS in English and Secondary Education. After college, I worked as a middle-school English teacher. I’ve had an interesting and varied career, from being an employee relations manager at the bank to becoming chief meteorologist at a television station. (I went back to school to study meteorology for three years). I’m a co-host of a radio program and a realtor.
While I was working in radio and TV, I also had the chance to do voice overs and other on-camera work. Voice over was something I did naturally. It was while I was working in real estate, and was constantly on the go, that I realized I needed balance in my life. My husband was a frequent traveler and I had a newborn baby. It was necessary that I found a way to work remotely. This was before it was so common.
To learn how to start, I reached out to a friend who was a radio personality and was currently doing voiceovers. Everything I learned was my own. Although the learning curve was steep and long, I eventually got my business started and continue to do voiceovers more than a decade later. Many of my friends and family have asked me how they could do voiceovers.
So, I decided to use my teaching skills and on-camera skills and created the online course “Work from home doing Voice Overs.” I now have The Online School for Voice Over to run and my voiceover work. It has been a wonderful experience and a great reward.

Can you please explain what voice acting means?
Voice acting, also known as “doing voiceovers”, is the act of speaking in audiobooks, commercials or other situations where you don’t see someone. Voiceovers can be found all around us: radio and television ads, web videos and eLearning courses.
What are the various types of voice-over?
Voice artists can be employed in many genres including audiobook narration, radio ads, TV commercials, eLearning courses and web videos. You can also use podcast intros, movie trailers, voice characters, announcers for live events, or video games.
What are the skills and requirements to be a voice actor?
Although there are not many requirements, voice actors need to have the ability to communicate clearly and understand what they are saying. A background in acting or singing can help, but you may also enjoy reading to your children at night or giving presentations.
You will need to be able to perform well and also know how to record and edit audio recordings. This skill can be learned with some practice.
What is the earning potential of a voice actor who is just starting out?
Voice actors are independent contractors and will audition for projects. It is important to find clients that you can work with again and again so that you have more time working than auditioning. Independent contractors have the ability to choose how much time they spend auditioning/working. Your earning potential is partly dependent on how committed you are to finding work.
The range of prices for voice artists varies depending on their usage. Voice overs for commercials that run nationally are different from those that will be used in an internal corporate office.
Many voice artists enjoy audiobooks. This is an example. You can earn money for audiobooks in one of two ways, or you can combine both. You can either get royalties, which is a percentage of the revenue generated by the sale of the audiobook, or you can be paid per hour for producing and narrating the audiobook. There are many projects that pay between $100 and $200 per hour. A 5-hour audiobook would cost $1000 at $200 per hour.
Once you are proficient in audio editing, mastering your skills can lead to a second income stream. Editing audio can be part of your business. Consider all the podcasts that you listen to. All those podcasts were edited and mastered by someone who was paid.
Are there any special requirements to begin voice acting?
