1. Hallmark
A Hallmark should be placed on most Gold products, whether it is jewelry or other items. This is an indication of the purity and origin of the gold. Sometimes the Hallmark is difficult to locate and often not in a prominent location. You may also find it difficult to locate. A magnifying glass is a good tool. This is a simple process that can also be applied to fake items. Later, I will write a Blog about Hallmarks and their meaning.
2. Magnet Test
If you are inspecting Gold jewelry, this should be your first test. Real gold is not magnetic, so you should use a strong magnet to ensure there is no magnetic pull. A piece may have additional metals if it pulls. Because of its base metals, plated Gold jewelry is magnetic.
3. Water Float Test
Gold is made up of very dense materials. It doesn’t float. It will sink if it is dropped into water. Be aware that metals can also sink at a rapid pace due to their heavy nature.
4. Vinegar Test
This is an old test, but you can add a few drops to the Gold piece you are testing and let it sit for a while. It won’t change color if it is Gold. If it does, it is not Gold.
5. Visual Test
Gold is a soft metal that can be easily worked with. Always inspect the edges to ensure there is no damage. No color changes should be made to the Gold piece. It should remain Gold, even after wear. It is possible that it has been Gold plated if you see another color.
6. Ceramic Stone Test
A Ceramic stone is used to test Gold, especially Jewellery, by dealers. Then they rub the piece of jewelry on the ceramic stone until it leaves a streak and then cut into it. The stone should only be of the Gold color.
7. Acide
When appraising Gold, dealers need to feel as confident as they can. Most dealers use the Nitric Acid Test. This is an extension of the Ceramic Stone Test. After a small amount of Gold has been applied to the Stone, dealers will apply various strengths of Acid to verify its purity. Once the right Acid has been used to match the purity, it should solve the Gold.
8. Talk to a Dealer
This is why gold dealers are available. Your local Gold Dealer will be happy to examine your item and offer advice if you have any questions.
