What is closed captioning?
Closed captioning refers to the transcription of interviews or videos. Closed captioning is when the subtitles are visible on a news broadcast or movie. Closed captioning is intended primarily for the hearing impaired. However, many industries employ closed captioners.
There are two main types of closed captioning.
You can also call this Real-time or Live closed captioning. This is when you transcribe live events. You will need to be able to type fast and accurately in order to do Real-time or Live captioning. Real-time captioners are more in demand than offline captioners because of the high demand. To get started as real-time captioners, you will often need prior certifications or a study background.
Closed captioning offline – This is when you caption events or videos that are not live, such as interviews, movies, or recorded events. You will also need to be accurate and fast when typing offline closed captioning. This job is better suited for those who are complete beginners in the industry.

What skills are required for closed captioning jobs
Although you don’t have to possess any specific qualifications for closed captioning, it is a good idea to be familiar with the job. You would benefit from excellent English command and high-level typing skills.
NCRA offers certification programs such as CRC (Certified Real Time Captioner), which can help you get started in real-time captioning.
You will need basic equipment to do closed captioning jobs, such as a computer, high-speed internet and captioning software.
What is the average salary for a job in closed captioning?
Glassdoor estimates that the average hourly pay for closed captioners is $13 depending on what type of captioning they are performing and how experienced they are.
